The diagonal method is older than most of the jigs sold to replace it, and it still tells the truth faster.

Squaring a Carcase Without a Jig

A carcase can look perfectly assembled and still be wrong by three or four millimeters, and the eye will not catch it. The boards meet, the edges align, glue squeezes out evenly along every joint — and the whole box is quietly settling into a parallelogram. The tool that catches this costs nothing and takes about ninety seconds: a tape measure, run corner to corner, twice.

Two Numbers, Not One Angle

Squaring a carcase with a try square or a protractor tests one corner at a time, and a case can pass four separate corner checks while still being out of square overall, because the error is spread across the joints rather than concentrated in one of them. The diagonal method tests the whole assembly at once. Hook the tape at the back-left corner and pull it to the front-right corner, then read the number. Do the same from back-right to front-left. If the case is square, the two diagonals match, within whatever tolerance the joint and the material allow. If they don't match, the case is racked — pushed toward a parallelogram — and the size of the gap tells you how badly. This isn't a new trick. Furniture makers were checking diagonals with string and a chalk mark long before laser squares or corner clamps existed, and the method has stayed in use because it measures what actually matters: whether the finished object sits flat and closes true, not whether one corner reads ninety degrees in isolation.

Reading the Direction of the Rack

The two diagonal readings don't just tell you that something is off — they tell you which way. Whichever diagonal comes back longer, its two corners are the ones being pulled apart; the case has racked toward the other pair. Picture the carcase from above: if the back-left-to-front-right diagonal reads longer, the case has skewed so the back-right and front-left corners have drawn in on each other, shortening that diagonal and stretching the other one out.

This is what turns a vague impression — "it doesn't look right" — into a specific, testable correction. You don't need to loosen every clamp and start again. You need to change the pressure along one diagonal, in one direction, and check that the numbers move the way they should.

A carcase that agrees with itself on both diagonals has been asked the same question twice, from opposite corners, and given the same answer. A single corner check has only been asked once.

Correcting With Clamp Pressure Alone

With the glue still open, a racked carcase is a solvable problem, not a scrapped one. Set a clamp, or a long sash bar, across the longer diagonal — corner to corner — and tighten it gradually. As that diagonal shortens, the shorter one lengthens to match, and the case walks itself back toward square. Re-measure both diagonals every few turns of the clamp rather than cranking it down in one motion; overcorrecting past square is just as easy as undercorrecting, and a carcase that has been pushed too far will happily rack the other direction.

Shop Note

The hook on the end of a tape measure has a small amount of built-in play, so it reads accurately whether you're hooking an outside corner or butting the tape against an inside one. That play is invisible on a single reading, but it can bias a diagonal comparison by a millimeter or two if you hook one corner and butt the other. Use the same grip, hooked or butted, for both diagonals, or the two numbers stop describing the same box.

Why the Jig Doesn't Replace the Check

A squaring jig — corner clamps sold in pairs, an aluminum triangle bar, a shop-built frame — holds a carcase at ninety degrees while the glue sets, and that's a genuine convenience. But a jig squares the corners it touches, not the box as a whole. A carcase can sit obediently in a jig at every corner while the panels between those corners bow or twist under pressure applied elsewhere, and come out no more square than it went in. The diagonal check measures the whole assembly rather than a local point on it, which is why it still earns a place even in shops that own every jig on the market. Where the Rack Actually Started

Most racked carcases were racked on paper before they were racked on the bench. A pair of side panels cut to slightly different lengths, a bottom panel measured from the wrong reference edge, a dado cut a millimeter off its intended center — any of these bakes a skew into the parts before glue ever touches them, and clamp pressure across a diagonal can only correct so much of that. It pulls a joint square; it does not shorten an oversized panel. If a carcase keeps failing the diagonal check after repeated correction, the more useful question usually isn't "which clamp" but "which panel," and the cutlist is a faster place to find that answer than the bench is.

A Two-Minute Check, Before the Glue Sets

  1. Dry-fit the carcase and seat every joint without full clamp pressure applied yet.
  2. Hook the tape at one back corner and read the diagonal to the opposite front corner.
  3. Without changing your grip on the hook, take the second diagonal from the remaining two corners.
  4. Compare the two numbers — whichever is longer marks the direction that needs correcting.
  5. Apply clamp pressure across the long diagonal and re-measure before the glue starts to skin over.

A note on this piece: the readings above are general shop reference points, not fixed standards. The acceptable difference on any carcase depends on its size, material, and joinery, and a maker working to a tight reveal will treat these numbers as looser than someone building a utility cabinet. Treat the method as the takeaway, not the exact millimeters.
