Datum Faces and Why They Matter

Every measurement needs a face it trusts. Pick the wrong one, or none at all, and every later number drifts with it.

A cabinetmaker and an apprentice were building a run of shelf brackets last spring, working from one drawing but two boards of scrap propped at either end of the same bench. The apprentice measured each bracket's notch from the board's top edge, the way the drawing showed it. The cabinetmaker, moving faster and thinking about the next job, flipped every third piece over out of habit and measured from the bottom instead. Both edges were straight. Both readings were technically correct. When the brackets went up against the carcase side, half of them sat a hair proud of the line, and nobody could say why until someone laid a straightedge across all six and watched them step down like a staircase. Two faces, two honest answers, one shelf that would not sit flat.

The Reference a Measurement Leans On

A dimension by itself does not mean much. "38 millimeters from the edge" only means something once you know which edge, and which face that edge belongs to. Drafters and machinists call this a datum: a chosen surface, line, or point that every other measurement on the part is taken from, rather than from whatever surface happens to be facing up at the moment. Furniture drawing borrows the idea in a plainer form — the face side and the face edge, picked early in stock preparation and held for the rest of the build. Once those two surfaces are chosen, a square, a gauge, or a story stick reads consistently no matter who picks the part up next or how many days pass between sessions.

One Part, Two Faces, Two Different Answers

The trouble is that a datum only works if everyone treats it as fixed. Across a longer project — a set of drawers, a run of doors, a carcase built over several weekends — the reference face can drift without anyone deciding it should. A part gets set down the "wrong" way after sanding. A second person picks up the cutlist without knowing which face the first person measured from. The dimension on paper was never wrong. The face it was measured from just stopped being the one everyone agreed on.

Marking It So It Cannot Be Forgotten

The fix is not a better memory. It's a mark that survives a coffee break, a shift change, or three weeks on a shelf. Traditional shop practice uses a looping pencil squiggle on the chosen face and an arrow on the adjoining edge that points back toward it — small, quick, and impossible to mistake for a design line. The habit only works if it happens at the very start, before the first joint is cut, and the routine that makes it stick is close to the one described in A Week With a Marking Gauge, where a single tool setting is held across five joints instead of reset for each one.

  • Flatten one face and joint one edge before any other operation touches the board.
  • Mark the chosen face with a light pencil squiggle, and the chosen edge with an arrow pointing back to that face.
  • Register every gauge, square, and story-stick reading against those two marks only — session after session, not just for the first cut.
  • For any part that leaves the bench before it's finished, write "measured from marked face" on its cutlist line, not just on the wood.

Shop Note

Choosing a face side and face edge is a drafting convention, not a rule about which surface of a board is somehow more correct. Nothing about the marked face makes it flatter or better grained than its opposite — the mark just keeps the whole project measuring from one agreed place instead of several, which is the entire point.

Where the Convention Slips

Even a good habit has weak points, and most of them show up in predictable places. A short table of the common ones is more useful than a warning, because each one has an equally short fix.

Carrying One Reference Through the Whole Set

None of this asks for a steadier hand or a sharper pencil. It asks for one decision, made once, at the start of stock preparation, and then held without exception until the part is finished. The bracket run from the opening of this piece was not a story about carelessness — both the cabinetmaker and the apprentice measured correctly. It was a story about two people trusting two different faces without ever agreeing which one the drawing actually meant. A datum face is cheap insurance against exactly that kind of quiet, well-intentioned disagreement, and it costs nothing but a squiggle of pencil lead.
